According to a recent study, more than eight out of ten shift workers and seven out of ten hospitality workers suffer from poor mental health.
Planday, a provider of shift scheduling software, surveyed 2,000 shift workers as well as 250 hospitality shift workers managers. The results showed that 85% reported poor mental health and 76% reported burnout among hospitality managers.
Nearly all workers surveyed (98%) reported that they worked overtime consistently. Planday said that unpredictable schedules, multiple job holders, and lack of management support were the main causes of burnout and stress in this sector.
As a result, the company launched a new resource online, Manager’s Toolkit : A guide for managers to help hospitality managers, owners, and managers better manage stress, burnout, and other issues among their team members.
The survey also looked at how technology was changing the industry. The survey found that almost all (94%) of hospitality managers thought their employers should invest in AI.
Dave Lee, CEO at Planday, stated: “Burnout is a problem that is well-known in the hospitality sector, and this new research confirms it.” These numbers represent more than just statistics. They are real people with real struggles, and they show the urgency of change.
This is not the first survey to show the extent of mental illness in the hospitality industry. , a survey by workforce management software company Quinyx, concluded that nearly two thirds of UK hospitality employees (65%) experienced stress at work. Most (95%) were also unable switch off when they got home.
