Research on dementia to improve independence

A government-funded research project is examining how to better support people with dementia in their efforts to remain independent.

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced that four new research networks will be focused on developing technologies to assist dementia patients in managing memory loss, communicating difficulties and coping better with everyday tasks.

While the research is not specifically focused on younger people with dementia, it is hoped it will nevertheless help the estimated 70% of people in the UK with ‘young onset’ dementia can better manage their condition. This could include staying at work.

The DHSC stated that the work aligns also with the government’s Plan of Change for the NHS and its desire to shift health care from hospitals to the community.

The University of Sheffield is working to develop technologies that will help dementia patients communicate, as the disease progresses. This includes supporting speech and memory difficulties.

Heriot-Watt University’s research team will develop technology that can predict and, where possible, slow down the progression of dementia symptoms.

Northumbria University academics will create local hubs for dementia patients in rural and remote locations, where they can access technology that helps them with daily tasks.

A team from Imperial College London is developing tools that are easy to use to help people live independently, and will also be using AI for data analytics.

According to the DHSC the networks will collaborate with a number of key partners, including the NHS and Age UK. They will also work with Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK as well as local authorities and councils. The projects are backed by PS6.7m in government funding.

Health Minister Karin Smyth stated: “By supporting these pioneering technologies, we will not only help people with dementia, but also transform their lives by allowing them to remain in their homes and be around those they love.

She added that “moving care from hospitals to communities is not just smart healthcare, it’s also about giving people their independence.”
