To ensure the success of the AI Action Plan, businesses must address skills shortages by implementing apprenticeships, and upgrading their tools to stay abreast with technological changes. Tim Stewart
The UK Government’s AI Opportunity Action Plan was announced in January and sets out an ambitious roadmap to harness artificial intelligence across industries. It promises innovation, economic growth, and global leadership.
The plan aims to make the UK “one of the world’s great AI superpowers” and to improve people’s lives in the UK. The AI Action Plan acknowledges that tens-of-thousands of AI professionals will be needed to achieve the government’s ambitious goals by 2030.
A recent survey also revealed a lack of confidence, with only 33% of UK business leaders feeling confident in their organisation’s level AI proficiency, compared to countries such as India (49%) and France (55%). Recent survey results also revealed a lack in confidence. Only 33% of UK leaders felt confident about their organization’s AI proficiency. This compares to countries like France (55%) and India (49%).
If we are to take full advantage of AI and become a leader in the AI race, it is vital that the skills shortages be addressed.
Continuous upskilling is essential
The AI Opportunities Plan highlights the need for AI expertise at all levels of education and profession.
To truly embrace AI, businesses need to adopt a policy that involves continuous upskilling. This will allow them to keep up with the technological advances and make the UK a global AI superpower. Just 27% of UK leaders think their non-technical staff is ready to integrate AI into their jobs. It’s important that the government work with businesses to make sure all employees have a basic understanding of AI and receive specialized training for their specific roles.
Apprenticeships that focus on core competencies are a good solution for jobs in which AI is a key factor. These programmes are a great way to develop core competencies, increase the AI talent pool and make sure that all opportunities for upskilling are met.
To provide UK businesses and employees with the foundational knowledge of AI, and to facilitate its adoption into UK business operations, collaboration between government and UK companies will be crucial.
The value of apprenticeships
The Action Plan is designed to expand AI education, increase diversity in the talent pool and create a platform for lifelong learning. Apprenticeships can be a key tool in achieving this.
Apprenticeships can be a great way to encourage participation from underrepresented groups. They are also a good tool for upskilling all levels of seniority, allowing them to gain more experience and expand their talent pool.
Businesses that embrace AI training and upskilling will experience cost savings over the long term, increased competitiveness, operational efficiency and accuracy, as well as higher employee satisfaction.
For maximum impact, it is important that apprenticeships are adequately funded, promoted widely, and tailored for the AI skills required by various industries. To ensure long-term workforce preparedness, it is essential that there are clear progression pathways between basic digital literacy and advanced AI roles.
Look ahead
The AI Opportunities Plan offers a multifaceted approach for developing the AI skills of our workforce. To keep apprenticeship standards in line with AI’s fast-changing landscape, collaboration between tech companies and educational institutions is essential.
This is a promising development, but the government needs to prepare its workforce first by addressing the current skills gap, in order to maximize the opportunities AI offers.
The UK will be able to build a more resilient workforce by boosting AI skills via tailored training such as apprenticeships.
This approach does not just focus on creating AI specialists. It also promotes AI literacy in all sectors. Qualifications are updated to include AI awareness and traditional subjects are adapted to support AI understanding.
