Uncovering the silent suffering of one in five UK employees

UK employees suffering from mental health problems

A new study reveals that 7 million UK workers feel they are unable to talk about their mental health at work.

RRC International conducted an analysis that found more than 22 percent (or workers) in the UK are suffering from mental illness every day, but they do not want to share this with their employer. These people are suffering from anxiety, depression and stress that is either caused by or made worse by their work.

The study, which analysed data on mental health from the Health and Safety Executive and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, also revealed a gender gap when it came to discussing mental illness at work. Over 3.9 million men experienced mental health issues at work in the past year but did not ask for help. This was 328,00 more men than women (335 million).

The research revealed that those in the health/social care and automotive sectors are most likely to suffer silently. Automotive topped the list, with 1,13 million people suffering from unnoticed mental issues. Healthcare and social workers came in second place with 1,11 million people.

Arts, entertainment, and recreation, as well as those in finance and insurance, are the least affected. There are 264,000 and 256,000 people in these industries who are struggling.

Richard Stockley comments, “It is shocking that many workers in the UK suffer with their mental health and their jobs make it worse.

“Mental Health has been taboo in the workplace for too long. There is still a lot to be done, even with the efforts and improvements of HR departments in all industries. The inability to openly discuss mental health issues with your HR department or a close friend can have a negative impact on productivity, job satisfaction and purpose. Our research has revealed some alarming statistics that need to be addressed. Mental health training, as well as policy changes, can help.

Our research sheds light on this issue, helping employers and HR teams better understand the extent of mental health issues. Employers can make their workplaces a safe place for everyone by implementing the right culture and providing the necessary training.
