Two-thirds of workers trust AI to make work decisions

A CIPD survey found that almost two thirds of respondents (63%) would trust artificial intelligence in making important decisions at work.

A survey of over 2,000 employees by the HR body revealed that 35% of respondents were less confident and would not trust AI to make important decisions, but instead prefer to use their own intelligence.

The CIPD surveyed professionals to find out their opinion on AI, in response to the recently released AI Opportunity Action Plan by the government. This plan aims to increase growth in public services using technology.

The HR professionals who responded to the LinkedIn poll also shared their thoughts about how this might impact their future work.

One person said: “Critical decisions in the workplace – particularly those that impact people – need human judgment to account for context and ethics. “A balanced approach is essential.”

Another person said: “AI is a source of additional analytics that will help us to make better and more efficient decisions.”

Some people said that the app saved them time, but they cautioned that it shouldn’t be used to “do your job for yourself”.

The CIPD encouraged organizations to “lean into” AI but stressed the human-centric method.

The report also called on employers and HR teams in the UK to create clear guidelines for AI use at work that cover ethical practices, data protection and fair treatment of employees.

Hayfa Mohdzaini is a senior policy and practices adviser for technology with the CIPD. She said, “There’s little doubt that AI transforms jobs, careers, and workplaces rapidly.”

By fostering a culture that encourages experimentation and sharing of knowledge, organizations can help their employees develop new skills and feel more confident using the latest technologies. AI has been shown to be a powerful tool for supporting decision-making, simplifying processes and freeing time for other activities.

“But, as our research suggests, human oversight remains very important. There is a delicate balance that must be struck. AI, when used responsibly and ethically, can improve jobs and productivity.

Organisations must have clear AI guidelines and provide training to their employees as necessary to make sure that no one is left behind. Employers must also monitor the way technology is used within their organizations and help employees understand the risks.

Peter Cheese, CEO of CIPD, also mentioned the importance of HR in ethical AI use during his keynote address last year at the CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition.

He said: “AI will have a rapid impact on the work that we do, so we need to make sure that the jobs we create are good ones for the people and are based on the principles of hard work.”
