Expert HR advice for success in the UK workplace


Due to the increasing importance of apprenticeships for addressing skills shortages, and nurturing talent in the UK, employers are being encouraged to focus on strategies which maximise the potential of the apprentices they have while ensuring that legal obligations are met.

By combining formal training and practical on-the-job education, employers can give apprentices the skills needed to excel. Feedback is also important. Regular conversations about performance and recognition of accomplishments keep apprentices engaged. Apprentices must feel valued and comfortable in sharing their ideas. It not only enriches their experience, but also the organisation by bringing new perspectives and innovations .”


Nicola also urges employers to be aware of their legal responsibilities. Every apprentice, for example, must have an Apprenticeship Agreement. This document is not just a formality. It lays the foundation for an effective working relationship, defining the job, the training schedule and the terms of employment. Employers must also comply with the Apprenticeship Minimum wage and ensure that apprentices get appropriate breaks, holiday pay and off-the job training. A safe work environment and the necessary training in health and safety are not negotiable.


Understanding the funding opportunities available to the government, including the apprenticeship levy is also important. These schemes can reduce the cost for training and make apprenticeships a more attractive investment. .”
