Capita workers have started a strike in protest of their employer’s refusal for them to negotiate a wage award for 2024. The industrial action is scheduled until the 5th February.
Workers were due to receive a pay award for 2024 in April. Unite union claims that Capita delayed the annual salary talks, promising to give the workers a raise in October. This has not happened despite the fact that this part of business reported profits and a healthy financial statement.
Workers at both Capita locations voted by a large majority to strike in December 2024. This week’s industrial action began on Wednesday and affects around 1,000 employees.
Unite General Secretary Sharon Graham stated: “This company can afford to give their workers a decent wage rise, but has cynically refused to do so in order to boost its profit.
Capita should not be deceived by the strong feelings of Unite members at its workplaces regarding pay. The union will support our members at Capita.
Capita’s staff in Manchester, Glasgow and London work for the Royal London financial services provider. Royal London will be affected by delays and disruptions.
Dominic Hook, the national officer of Capita, said: “Capita had months to sit with Unite and negotiate with the union in order to ensure that its workforce received a fair wage deal for 2024. Capita’s bosses should not think that hiding this issue from their employees will solve the problem.
The Capita contract will be delayed and disrupted because of the management’s lack of action.
A Capita spokesperson stated: “We have put plans in place to minimize the impact of industrial actions, we met with union representatives for further discussions but unfortunately we haven’t been able resolve positively.”
