Aldi offers 1,600 new jobs at its new stores

Aldi, the supermarket chain in the UK, has announced that it will create 1,600 new jobs as they expand their stores.

Sainsbury’s and Tesco, both rivals, have recently announced that they will reduce their headcount. Sainsbury’s has cited an increase in the national insurance bill for its decision.

The discount retailer has plans to open new stores in Cambridgeshire, Greater Manchester, and Lytham (Lancashire).

In January, the government announced that the pay for store assistants would be increased to PS12.71 per hour nationwide, and PS14.00 within the M25. This is the highest wage in the sector and also above the living wage which will increase to PS12.21 in April.

The pay for store assistants will increase to PS13.62 or PS14.23 per hour depending on the length of employment.

Aldi’s HR director Kelly Stokes stated that Aldi is “committed” to rewarding careers for its store staff and offers them market-leading salaries.

Giles Hurley added that Aldi UK & Ireland’s colleagues were the best in their field and the latest pay increase reflects the company’s commitment to ensure they are paid the highest.

“Each and every Aldi employee plays a vital role in helping us to deliver on our promise of bringing unbeatable Aldi pricing to more customers throughout the UK.”
