Elizabeth Line train drivers to vote for strike on 27 February

The Elizabeth Line train drivers will strike for four days in the next few weeks over a pay dispute.

Aslef members will be on strike for the following dates: Thursday, 27 February, Sat, 1 March, Sat, 8 March, and Monday, 10 March.

The drivers on the line rejected a pay rise of 4.5% cents. On an 88% participation rate, 95% of the drivers are union members. Aslef blamed MTR for the dispute.

TfL announced before the announcement of the strike that MTR was to be replaced in May as the operator of the Elizabeth line by a consortium headed by Go-Ahead, which included the Tokyo Metro.

Mick Whelan said that the union’s general secretariat was “instrumental” in the success and success of the Elizabeth Line. It is a partnership between the company and their employees. But, despite all our efforts, MTR decided to not acknowledge the contribution, importance and value of train driver in this success.

Mike Bagshaw said that the 4,5% offer would have “maintained some of the highest wages in the industry along with enhanced conditions.”

“Any strike action could be disruptive for those who depend on the Elizabeth Line. We will work closely to inform customers of other travel options.

“We are committed to continuing our dialogue with Aslef, in the hopes of resolving this conflict.”

Elizabeth Line workers are reportedly paid more and have better working conditions compared to drivers of London Underground and Overground, who are employed by Arriva Rail London. Aslef used to use this in the past to get better pay for members of the Overground and Underground services.

After two strike calls were cancelled at the last moment, all 16,500 Tube employees received an average raise of 4.6% in November. They also got a promise of four days of work.

Whelan stated that he believed MTR’s refusal to pay the claim was due to its loss of contract with TfL for the Elizabeth line. “If this is true, I find it very disappointing that the company has behaved in such a way.” He added.

A TfL spokeswoman said: “We encourage Aslef to continue working on resolving the dispute and avoid affecting our customers with strikes.”
