Researchers highlight barriers to employment for those with mobility needs

A new study by UK mobility retailer CareCo highlights the barriers that people with mobility issues face in finding employment.

The study, which is meant to increase awareness about the “mobility gaps”, revealed that many workplaces were inaccessible and did not have ramps or lifts to accommodate wheelchair users.

Insufficient parking is another obstacle for those with mobility problems. There may be no or very limited disability parking available. This means that they might not be able find a space suitable.

The report also highlighted the lack of awareness in the workplace and the attitudes towards people with mobility problems. These individuals are often treated differently, or believe to be less capable than others.

CareCo’s research showed that inflexible hours of work can be a barrier to getting a job. People with mobility problems may submit requests for reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act, even if they are outside what is offered.

The company warns that employers may lose talented employees if they fail to understand their needs.

It reminded employers that they have a responsibility to care for their employees, and stated the importance of hiring those with mobility problems, citing a reduced staff turnover, and a greater talent pool.

Will Harrison, the founder of CareCo said: “The benefits for businesses are enormous and cannot be ignored.” It has been proven time and again that the ability to hire from a larger pool of candidates and develop loyal colleagues can have a real impact on a company’s bottom line.

He warned that if companies don’t identify and remove potential barriers, they may lose out on the talented employees who support their growth.

Harrison said: “Barriers for people with mobility problems to enter the workforce need to be addressed. The benefits to businesses and jobseekers alike are enormous.” This is a win for all, from profit margins to wellbeing.
