According to LinkedIn’s report “Jobs On The Rise 2025”, the UK has the fastest growing jobs in the field of artificial intelligence, environmental officer, and data governance manager.
Faster than 55 percent of the positions identified in the report didn’t exist 25 years ago, a sign of how quickly the workforce landscape has evolved. Many organisations are still unprepared. According to 45 percent of HR professionals, their company lacks a clear understanding about the skills needed for the future.
LinkedIn predicts that the skills required for jobs in Britain will have changed 65 percent since 2016. The shift in focus is due to the advancement of technology and an increased focus on eco-friendly initiatives. But 20 percent of UK employees are concerned about their ability to meet future skill requirements. This creates challenges for both employers and employees.
Green and technical hiring: Challenges
Report reveals that recruiters still face challenges in locating candidates with technical skills (43%) and sustainability knowledge (19%). Globally, the demand for “green talents” is increasing twice as fast as supply between 2023-2024. LinkedIn data shows that green-skilled job seekers enjoy a higher hiring rate than the general workforce.
Even though the emphasis is on green skills, there are still gaps. One in five jobs will be lacking in green talent by 2030. This figure is expected to increase to one in every two roles by 2050. LinkedIn reports persistent disparities including a gender divide, with only 10% of women and 17% of men possessing at minimum one green skill.
The UK Workforce’s Resilience
UK workers have shown resilience and adaptability. 56 percent are open to changing industries, and 27 percent want to learn skills in demand. Gen Z is a crucial demographic to expand green talent. However, currently only one in twenty Gen Z workers have green skills.
The competition for remote and hybrid jobs continues to be fierce. Remote job applications in the UK accounted 18 percent of all applications, while hybrid postings made up 40 percent of all available positions.
