Gen Z is most interested in jobs that offer a four-day week

According to a survey by Development Beyond Learning in partnership with Thred Media, 93 percent Gen Z respondents consider a four-day week as an important factor in job attraction.

The survey of 200 participants shows that a younger generation is eager to change workplace norms. This includes mental health, productivity and finding a better balance between work and life.

The findings show that 90 percent of Gen Z participants think a four-day week would improve mental health. The extra day would be used by many in different ways. 31 percent chose rest and self care, 27 percent chose hobbies or passions and 22 percent planned to spend more time with family and friends. Other respondents stated that they would learn a new skills or volunteer.

Over half (55%) of respondents believe that a shorter workweek would make them more productive. A further 56 percent of respondents said that they would be willing to accept a slight pay cut in exchange for a shorter week, but maintaining financial stability is still a major concern.

Preferred four-day workweek models

Pete Humphreys is the CEO of DBL. He said, “Gen Z will make up 30 percent of the global workforce in 2025. Their perspectives are important.” Our research provides a good starting point for employers who want to attract young talent and innovate by reimagining traditional workweeks.

Participants expressed their preference for to implement a four-day week.

  • 51 percent of respondents prefer shorter work hours without pay cuts.
  • 34 percent of respondents preferred a schedule that involved longer shifts each day over a period of four days.
  • 15% of respondents were either undecided, or didn’t find any option appealing.

Participants are enthusiastic about the four-day week, but they also noted some potential challenges. These include the possibility of pay cuts – 82 percent said that it was important to keep their current salary, and fears over increased micromanagement and team collaboration.

Jenk Oz is the founder and CEO at Thred Media. He said that Gen Z was not more complex than other generations. However, our priorities have been shaped by the fast-paced world of today. If employers want to retain and attract the best talent, they must adapt to this shift.
