We saw a major shift in 2024 when it came to how companies approach diversity. Many threw out or changed their diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Companies such as John Deere, Walmart and Tractor supply Co. All of these companies have made major changes to their DEI program in response to the pressures from conservative groups, led by Robby starbuck.
The National Center for Public Policy Research is another conservative group that has pressured Costco to abandon their DEI principles. They argued that such programs carry a high legal risk (in 2023 Starbucks won a wrongful dismissal lawsuit brought by a White Manager) and cited the number of large corporations who have rolled back DEI initiatives.
Costco’s Board of Directors said no at the beginning of the year and encouraged shareholders to vote against a rollback of their DEI programs.
