After Avanti West Coast made a revised offer, a series of rail strike scheduled to occur over Christmas has been cancelled.
RMT members had planned to take industrial action between 22 and 23 December. This would have caused severe disruptions in the Avanti West Coast service between London, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.
In a referendum that ends on 17 December, train managers will vote on a revised offer which includes “revised enhanced” rest-day working payments as well as discussions about a new technological agreement.
The RMT stated: “We are still in disagreement with Avanti, as our members vote on this revised offer.”
RMT members “overwhelmingly”, rejected Avanti’s proposals regarding rest day agreements.
In an electronic referendum, 92.8% rejected the proposals of the company on a turnout rate of 81%.
Mick Lynch, the general secretary of the General Secretary’s Office, said that:
“Training managers are treated unfairly in comparison to senior managers who receive substantial payments for performing these roles.
“Our members are tired and this strike action shows their determination to get a fair deal. Avanti must now make serious proposals to reflect the important contribution made by our Train Managers.
“We are ready to negotiate a settlement, and we encourage management to be serious in resolving the dispute.”
