After rejecting a revised wage deal, workers on the Avanti train line on West Coast have voted for a strike on New Years Eve.
The strike will continue on Sundays from 12 January to 25 May.
Last week, union members voted to accept a new deal after a strike that was scheduled for the Christmas holiday period was suspended .
The revised rest day working payment and the promise of new technology agreements were also included.
RMT has confirmed, however, that it “resoundingly” rejected the latest offer after two votes. The union will strike now on Sundays from 12 January to 25 May, as well as 31 December and 2 January.
The spokesperson said that “sustained strike action” is the only way for management to be focused on negotiating a settlement with the union.
The union stated that 400 members of their membership were involved in the dispute, and 83% voted to reject the proposed deal.
“We are disappointed that our RMT-member train managers have rejected the revised, very reasonable offer we made to resolve the dispute over rest days and to avoid inconvenience to our customers. The spokesperson stated that they were still open to working with RMT in order to resolve the dispute.
A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said: “This news is extremely disappointing for passengers who had hoped to be able to end strike action by 2024. We strongly encourage the RMT and Avanti to return to the table to work in good faith and resolve this issue as quickly as possible.
As part of our reform plans, we are determined to move to a seven-day work week and stop the overreliance on the rest day, giving passengers the reliability and certainty they deserve.
