Refugees can find employment at a Job Fair

A job fair aimed at helping refugees find employment is being held today (4 December).

Tent UK and hiring platform Indeed, which supports refugees in finding work, are hosting the event at London’s Kia Oval Cricket Ground. UNHCR and Department for Work and Pensions will also be partnering in the event.

Employers come from sectors like hospitality, retailing, healthcare, energy, and professional services.

Tent UK members such as ISS Marriott International, Menzies Aviation and Menzies Aviation will be on hand to speak to attendees.

Companies will interview candidates for various roles, including sales assistants and housekeepers. They may also conduct interviews with accountants and mechanical engineers. Job seekers will receive advice on creating CVs and covering letters that are suitable for the UK market.

The event will offer translation services in Arabic, Farsi Dari, Pashto, and Ukrainian.

UNHCR reports that the UK hosts just under 600,000 refugees, mainly from Ukraine, Hong Kong and Afghanistan.

Tent UK states that refugees face many structural barriers to employment. These include a lower level of language, a lack in social and professional networks and fewer childcare options. Job fairs can help remove some of these obstacles.

Jen Stobart of Tent UK said that “Securing meaningful work is an important milestone in the integration of refugees and a great opportunity for employers who can fill vacancies with a pool of skilled, loyal and resilient talent.”

Clive Meyers added that everyone should have access to quality jobs, no matter their background or where they are from.

This is Indeed’s ambition and we want to do more than just connect employers with candidates. It is important to eliminate the barriers and biases that prevent people from finding the right opportunities for their needs and skills.

Indeed has been organizing job fairs for refugees in Europe since 2022. They work with Tent and UNHCR. The event in London last year attracted over 1,000 potential recruits.
