Look, I’m sure everyone hates plans for performance improvement. A recent HR Acuity survey found that they are in the ascendancy.
Managers see them as busywork — something that they must do to fire someone. The employees feel like being placed on a PIP means they only have 90 days to live. HR is frequently frustrated by the results. As HR executive Anna Tavis recently told the Wall Street Journal: “I spent fifteen good years in Wall Street and elsewhere.” It’s just a cover-up. It’s a window dressing. “None of these performance improvement plans leads to improving performance.”
It’s understandable that the employee won’t improve if you write a PIP to terminate the employee. The employee is not trying because they know that they will fail.
