The ultimate guide to music for productivity

What is the best music to increase productivity? This is a straightforward question, and we finally have an answer.

Certain music can improve performance. A recent study showed that background music improved working memory and accelerated skill-based tasks. The right music can also stimulate the brain’s reward system by releasing dopamine, which improves mood. We’ve compiled a list of the top music tracks to increase productivity.

Distraction is one of the greatest threats to productivity in the workplace. Other threats include lack of motivation and confidence. Other deadlines, a busy brain or the buzzing background of an office are all common distractions.

You’re not the only one who feels this way. Our recent survey suggests that music could be just what you need. Nearly three quarters of the workers we surveyed are often distracted at work. But, music is a great way to focus and stay productive for four out of five (80%).

Music is a great way to show your appreciation for employees. Two-thirds of them (66%) say that music motivates them more than anything else. This tool can be used by both the company and the workers. More than that, 90% of people feel more confident if their task list is accompanied by a great song. So, not only does music play a role in employee confidence, but the type of music is also important.

TheMusicLicence created this ultimate guide in order to give you the survey results and research on why music can be a powerful tool to focus at work. Recent research found that background music can help workers maintain task-focus mental state by preventing mind wandering. There can be a disconnect, however, between what workers expect to listen to while working and what is actually playing.

You may want to ask your employees what music they prefer so that you can create a soundtrack that meets their needs. Let’s make your life easier.

We have analysed thousands productivity playlists to identify 1,000 songs that are commonly featured. We’ve analyzed this dataset to find out what makes the perfect productivity playlist.

Genre was our first consideration. Please, drumroll…Pop music! Pop music topped the charts and was consistently the most productive – on both company and personal playlists. Sub-genres such as Pop-Punk and Pop-Rock also contributed to its popularity. Rock was second and accounted for just over 25% of all featured songs.

In a separate survey, we asked workers in various sectors about their favourite genres of music for playlists at work. We found that warehouse and logistics is one sector which gets it right. Pop music dominates their playlists (55%), and is also the preferred choice of workers (30%). Pop music is always the most popular, but it may not be what all of your employees prefer. You could switch from pop to rock or house to chillout to ensure that all workers hear their favorite genres.

Marianne Rizkallah is our music therapist and she breaks down each genre’s benefits for productivity. This way, you can be sure that no matter what sector your company falls into, there will be a genre which works well with your employees:

Pop music is a great choice for a productivity playlist because it’s predictable. Pop music is known for its predictability, which makes it a great choice for a productivity playlist.

R&B Marianne says “R&B is a smooth, clean sound with a nice vocal line and production”.

“As in Pop Music, the song length, the tempo and the sound palette are often the same across genres, allowing the ear to be distracted from background noise, and the brain to concentrate on the task.

Classical and Chillout:Classical is popular for focusing, due to its soothing effects. ” Chillout music and classical music can induce calmness and focus.”Marianne says.

Listening to classical music improves spatial-temporal abilities. It is no wonder that composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Bach are often chosen for their ability to improve concentration.

We’ve put together a guide for those who want to use music to concentrate but aren’t sure where to begin. Here at TheMusicLicence we have created the ultimate music tool to get you started. You can find the best genres for concentration based on the task you are performing. For example, R&B music will help your brain focus. Classical music will relax you. Pop music is a great way to keep up your pace and complete the task.
