The Generation Game looked at the management and creation of a multi-generational workforce. The webinar was sponsored by Sanderson Government & Defence and featured a panel of Juliet Crisp, The Post Office’s Head of People Strategy, Government and Planning, Nick Walrond, Managing director, and Andrea Metherell, Capgemini’s Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Wellbeing. The conversation focused on the current state of the age-diverse workplace, its challenges and opportunities.
The panel also pointed out that stereotypes are not always helpful when attempting to attract and employ people. Nick Walrond said that people do different things in different stages of their lives. Flexibility is key if organizations want to help people achieve a balance between work life.
It was also mentioned that it’s more difficult for certain roles and industries to offer flexibility. Sometimes, an employee must be in a particular location for a specified period of time. It may take some initial work to manage candidate expectations and position the role. If done correctly, diverse candidates can still understand the requirements of the role.
Employers must be willing to listen to employees and reflect their needs and wants. They should also find ways to accommodate the working styles and preferences of their workers. It was noted that people come to work for many different reasons, including the fact they have decided retirement is not for them right now. Organisations who can accommodate this will be the ones with the most diverse workforces.
The workplace will continue to change and shift as the workforce ages and lives longer. Employers need to work together to make the best use of all the candidates’ skills and knowledge.
