According to a new study, employers should hire role models who are relatable to younger LGBTQ+ employees.
According to a survey conducted by myGwork, 80% of LGBTQ+ Gen Z graduates and students are more willing to accept a job offer if senior employees are visible allies.
Business leaders for LGBTQ+ professionals have warned employers that they risk losing young talent if the leadership team is not representative of a diverse workplace.
Seven in ten (70%) LGBTQ+ Gen Z respondents also cited workplace culture as a factor. They wanted to be able to express themselves authentically. Three-quarters (75%) of LGBTQ+ job seekers say they’d be hesitant to join an organisation where they fear they won’t be able to express themselves authentically.
MyGwork says that the findings show that authenticity isn’t just expected, but appreciated. The report says that visible LGBTQ+ role-models are essential to ensuring that workplaces are inclusive and welcoming. Many Gen Z job seekers may leave an organization without them.
Adrien Gaubert and Pierre Gaubert are the co-founders at myGwork. They said that companies who commit to a visible representation of their culture and an authentic environment will not only improve corporate culture, but also gain a competitive advantage in recruitment.
In the survey, nearly half of LGBTQ+ students (48%) reported experiencing discrimination in their academic or work environment based on their sexual orientation or gender identification. This compares to only three out of ten (32%) non-LGBTQ+ students.
36% of LGBTQ+ respondents also reported that they have personally experienced discrimination including homophobia, transphobia or biphobia.
MyGwork, in recognition of the importance of inclusive recruitment, launched the WorkFair platform. This platform connects employers with diverse LGBTQ+ talents. The Careers Fair, which will take place this year on 13 November, gives LGBTQ+ job seekers the opportunity to attend workshops, panels and learn about inclusive employment opportunities.
