A study released ahead of World Menopause Day (18th October) shows that one fifth (20%) of employers expect to see an increase in demand for support, especially for women going through menopause.
Towergate employee benefits released the research and is urging employers to take action to support women during menopause in the workplace.
Around six million UK workers are experiencing menopause. The symptoms can be anything from mood swings and anxiety to physical discomfort and insomnia. They can have a significant impact on both mental and physical wellbeing. Towergate’s study found that employers have begun to recognize the importance of this issue and are looking for ways to address the growing demand.
Raising Awareness
Education is a great place to start for employers who want to provide menopause assistance. Raising awareness about menopause symptoms, and their possible effects, can help foster a supportive and understanding work environment. Open discussion and education can help demystify the menopause and make employees feel more supported during this stage of life.
The options available to support women experiencing menopause at work are increasing in number and accessibility. Many mainstream health insurers include menopause benefits in their employee benefit packages. A growing number specialists offer targeted services to manage menopause. Employers also turn to advisers that provide tailored solutions to meet the needs of their menopausal staff.
Debra Clark, Towergate Employee Benefits’ head of wellbeing, said, “I know first-hand how important it is to raise awareness and provide appropriate support.” I would encourage employers to learn more about menopause support and seek advice on the best options for their organization.
Retaining experienced employees
Menopause has become an important part of retaining talent as the workforce ages. Supporting menopause in the workplace has tangible benefits for employees as well as organisations.
According to research, offering this support can increase productivity, reduce absenceeeism and help businesses retain staff that might otherwise be compelled to quit due to unmanaged symptom. It can help retain experienced and capable employees.
Debra Clark stated that “people affected by menopause often reach the pinnacle in their careers.” The menopausal women are a valuable resource to the workplace. They have an abundance of knowledge and experience. It is important that businesses support this demographic.
