Employee Benefits: British workers forgo gym memberships in favour of supermarket discounts

According to a new study, supermarket vouchers are the most popular perk at UK workplaces.

According to an analysis of UK employee benefit data, 98% of employees who have access to supermarket discounts supplement their weekly grocery shopping. The average employee saves PS725 annually with this practical benefit.

Rippl’s research, which analyzed workplace benefits for more than 145,000 employees, found that dental care is the second-most valued benefit. Six out of 10 employees use their private benefits to supplement NHS services due to the increasing pressure and limited availability.

The UK workforce is also fond of salary advances. More than three-quarters of workers (78%) have used the service on average in the last year. But despite that, only 23% of employers provide the benefit.

The same disconnect exists when it comes gym memberships. Gym memberships, often viewed as a’most popular perk’, are used by fewer than 8 percent of employees. Yet, more than 75 percent of employers provide them.

Chris Brown, CEO of Rippl comments: “There’s a clear connection that the most valuable workplace perks are the ones that support employees in everyday life. This is especially true when it comes to ease the burden of essential costs and cost of living.

Retail and lifestyle discounts can be a great benefit to employees. They can assist with daily expenses like weekly grocery shopping, family meals out or cinema trips. Employers can easily provide financial support to employees without having to give them significant raises. For workplace perks that have a real impact, they need to be useful for employees on a daily basis, and not just be a way of appeasing a larger business objective.

To offer employee benefits people truly value, employers must first understand the unique priorities of their workforce. In today’s highly competitive market, employers must prioritize their employees’ needs and provide them with the support they need.

What are the most valuable perks?

  1. Retail vouchers
  2. Salary Advance
  3. Dental
  4. Eye tests
  5. Donations to charity
