WorkJam’s research shows that the UK hospitality industry faces challenges in managing its frontline staff due to outdated management practices.
These shortcomings are a result of outdated workforce management practices, and an insufficient number of digital solutions. Nearly 70% of respondents said that their organizations lack flexible scheduling tools and efficient workforce management. Meanwhile, almost 80% acknowledged the need for improvement.
Only 20 percent of companies offer flexible pay and only 21 percent allow employees to swap shifts.
Technology Gaps & Legislative Concerns
The research revealed concerns regarding the sector’s readiness for the Employment Rights Bill that is expected to come into effect by 2026. Over a third of respondents (35%) admitted that they did not fully understand the Bill’s implications, especially its provisions regarding minimum wage compliance (39%), and the prohibition on zero-hours contracting (36%).
Mark Williams, WorkJam’s Managing Director EMEA, said: “The disconnect between tech-led workforce, employee experience, and operational efficiency is a serious issue, especially when organisations are already dealing with multiple internal and external pressures.”
The hospitality industry faces a pressing need to upgrade their technological capabilities and empower their employees. If businesses get this right, they can reap significant benefits for their employees, customers and business. These include improved employee retention and cost savings as well as an enhanced customer experience.
