The index reveals key insights into UK employees’ expectations regarding workplace bonuses and gifts, as well as the impact the festive season has on their working life.

The cost of living crisis is continuing to affect UK workers. Research shows that 63% feel stressed about holiday expenses. However, 42% plan to purchase gifts for their colleagues. This highlights the importance of workplace gratitude. The expectation of a bonus and a gift is high. 48% expect a bonus from their manager, and 53% anticipate a holiday bonus.

This study highlights the importance of traditions at the end of the year on the company culture. 82% of respondents reported increased camaraderie during the holiday season. The study found that many employees (56%) view gifts as a way to show their appreciation for their work. This highlights the importance of workplace recognition during this season of gratitude and connection.

Recognising your achievements is a gift that keeps on giving

56% of respondents prioritized end-of-year appreciation for their co-workers, and most of them did so through verbal thank yous (68%) or gifts (62%). Employers have the opportunity to promote an atmosphere of appreciation at work.

Notably, 77% Brits stated that they would use the points earned from peer-topeer recognition programs for Christmas gifts. 76% also agreed that rewards based on points could ease holiday spending pressures. 61% of UK respondents also felt that formal recognition programs would encourage more frequent expressions of gratitude and make them feel more natural.

But despite their obvious appeal, recognition programmes and rewards are far from being universal. Gallup’s research indicates that only 34% percent of employees worldwide say that their employer has such a program. This discrepancy not only represents an opportunity missed by companies to provide additional support to teams in financially challenging times, but also foster a culture that values and connects. Gallup’s research shows that employees who are given high-quality recognition have a lower likelihood of leaving their job. Employees are looking to receive and give tokens of gratitude, which presents an opportunity for employers.
