The majority of employees hope to receive a gift or seasonal bonus from their manager

Over one-third of workers (53%) expect a bonus for the season, while another third (48%) anticipate a gift from their boss.

Workhuman’s research found that despite the financial strains on UK employees during this holiday season, workplace appreciation is still high amongst workers.

The latest Human Workplace Index of the company, which surveyed over 1,000 full-time employees, revealed that 63% felt stressed out by holiday expenses. However, 42% planned to purchase gifts for their colleagues.

Workhuman says that more than half of respondents (56%) believe gifts reflect their performance. This highlights the importance of workplace appreciating during the holiday season. The findings show that employers can promote an appreciation season in the workplace.

56% of respondents said that they would like to express their gratitude at the end of the year for their co-workers. Verbal thanks were most popular (68%) and physical gifts (62%).

More than four out of five respondents (82%) reported an increase in camaraderie, team-building and events during the holiday season.

Niamh Graham is the senior vice president for global human experience of Workhuman. She said, “The end of the year offers a unique opportunity to amplify appreciation, celebrate accomplishments, and make employees truly feel valued.” A well-crafted program of recognition not only increases year-end appreciation, but also contributes to employee satisfaction and the company’s culture.

A similar percentage (76%) also agreed that rewards based on points could ease holiday spending pressures.

Over three-quarters (61%) of respondents believe that a formalized recognition program would encourage them to express their gratitude more frequently and naturally.

Graham said: “As companies navigate the challenges of an unstable economy, recognition is critical for cultivating a culture that lasts all year. When recognition is done correctly, it goes beyond the holiday season. It creates lasting connections, positive effects on morale and employee engagement and creates an environment where employees are valued all year round.
