I love Halloween. Halloween is a fun holiday with costumes and candy. Sometimes, even highly-qualified HR professionals can feel as if they’re just dressed up like HR professionals.

The imposter syndrome exists. If you suffer from this syndrome, you may need to boost your confidence. You may need to get some extra training in order to be confident about what you do.
How to tell if you suffer from imposter’s syndrome
Double-check everything. You googling everything, even though you know that FMLA lasts 12 weeks.
- Even though you have 15+ years of experience in high-performance, you don’t even apply for jobs.
- You do not speak in meetings. Why are you so quiet? You’re a people expert.
Could you be suffering even more from Expert Syndrome? It is when you believe you know something but you don’t.
Here’s a way to tell if you suffer from the expert syndrome.
You know the answer to everything. Real experts know their limits and will tell you. A person with Expert Syndrome will not admit to anything outside of her domain of knowledge, often because she does not know what she doesn’t know.
Research=Googling. Anyone who gets their expertise from “researching” on the Internet is not a true expert. Real experts are experienced in their field, and they read primary sources or conduct real research.
It’s not necessary to double-check. You don’t need to check.
You (almost always) claim to have total consensus. Rarely is there only one right way to do anything. Expert Syndrome is likely to be present in someone who insists that everything is black and gray.
