New research says that Gen Z workers are more likely to be attracted by employers who offer a work-life balance.

LONDON 23rd Oct 2024: The distinctly different requirements for work-life balance of Gen Z is seen as the greatest challenge employers face when trying to adapt to this new generation of workers.

The poll found that nearly half of respondents ( 48 %) said Gen Z’s demands for work-life balance were the top challenge employers face. In second place, the need to align with Gen Z values was ranked ( 38 %).

Employers rated both of these as more difficult than retaining creative talent ( 8 %) and embracing tech innovation to engage digital natives. ( 6 %).

Designit’s study shows that businesses will have to make major changes to engage, motivate and retain Gen Z employees. This is because employee experience directly impacts customer experience.

Dr Pardis Sharfafi is the global responsible business leader at Designit, which partnered with Los Angeles World Airports in order to develop Altitude, its proprietary digital platform for airport workers. He said, “There’s a perception that Gen Z are difficult to work with. They’re lazy and withhold their energy, creativity and commitment. This perception is based on the desire for a better work-life balance.

“Rather than blame Gen Z for their apparent lack of motivation or effort, employers should realise that insouciance from this generation is a mindset evolution. The employers will be the ones to have to adapt.

Many employers are focusing on the employee experience. They know that employees want transparency, integrity and commitment to shared values at their workplaces. Companies that recognize these priorities and adapt their practices accordingly are more likely to be successful in attracting and retaining Gen Z talents.

“That means creating an environment that honors Gen Z values while offering a fair, transparent exchange of time and effort for their employees.

Gen Z is increasingly motivated by the common good, by strong company values and an offer of a fair, transparent and honest transaction. Insouciance reigns if neither is available. Employers who are proactive in responding to these changes, will prosper as Gen Z dominates the workplace.
