I am writing this while waiting at Heathrow Terminal 3 for an American Airlines flight from Dallas. Then, I’ll catch a flight to Midland and then a connection flight back so that I can attend the conference in Dallas on Thursday.
I’m so excited.
Here is a sneak peek of what I’ll be saying to the HR professionals attending this conference. Here’s what I will say:
Take control of your own life.
You can’t control everything, right?
The weather, your boss’s traffic, the cost of eggs and some people being world-class weenies are all things you can’t control.
You may want to complain
Rain ruined your blue suede shoes
You are constantly interrupted by your boss, who gives you bad assignments and contacts you at weekends.
Traffic is ridiculous
Since you were 16, the price of eggs has doubled!
You are surrounded by weenies of the highest quality
Most people follow this path. They complain constantly. It’s fun to complain. You bond together as everyone joins in. “Can you believe what those scumbags in marketing did today?” “I never!”
You feel that you have no control. You can try something else instead.
You can decide how you want to act
You can choose every day. You can make choices every day.
Match your clothing to the weather
What you say to your boss will determine whether or not you continue working for them
Plan your commute according to traffic patterns.
The price of eggs at the grocery store will be reduced if you have your own backyard chickens.
Limit your contact with world-class snobs.
Complaining can be a lot of fun, especially if you don’t have to do much more than rant. Woo-hoo!
You’re also stuck. You don’t need to be stuck. You
