One in six people blames their job for unhealthy eating

According to research, long hours, irregular shift patterns and stress can all make it difficult for workers maintain healthy eating habits. In fact, 16% of respondents blamed their jobs for the irregular or unhealthy eating behaviors.

The online pharmacy ZAVA Online Doctor conducted a survey of 2,000 adults and found that more than half (52%) of workplaces do not provide healthy snack options. This is despite the fact that 59% of respondents said they would benefit from having access to nutritious snacks.

Half of the respondents (50%) said that societal pressures to lose weight have increased over the last decade, adding additional stress to those who are already struggling with their relationship to food.

Stress and emotional eating can be a major obstacle to weight management. 31% of UK adults say emotional eating is their biggest obstacle to weight loss, and 21% confess to stress eating.

One-tenth of respondents said that they tried to lose weight prior to starting a new job or seeking a raise, and one-fourth believed their weight prevented them from getting a job.

Dr Crystal Wyllie is a GP with ZAVA Online doctor. She said that cravings are difficult to control, whether you are an emotional eater or a stress snacker. Assessing whether a craving stems from physical hunger or emotional reasons can help you make better choices.
