NEARLY 60 PERCENT OF PAYROLL TEAM NOT HIRING APPRENTICES — NEW RESEARCH SHOW

A new study shows that nearly 60% of payroll teams do not hire apprentices

The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals is urging payroll departments to offer more apprenticeships. This comes after a new study revealed a lack of knowledge about the benefits of in-the-field training.

Nearly 1 in 3 respondents to a CIPP study said they would not know where to begin.

The UK introduced the apprenticeship levy to boost essential training for businesses and develop apprenticeship programmes. However, billions of pounds have been returned to Treasury since 2017.

The Chartered Institute of Payroll, Pensions and Reward Professionals (CIPP) is committed to increasing the visibility of payroll within businesses in the UK. Jason Davenport, the Chief Executive Officer of the CIPP, is encouraging more payroll departments in the UK to take into consideration apprentices and funding options.

He said: “Payroll is more than just processing salaries. Many other departments depend on the information provided by their payroll team every day. They are at the heart of any organization and provide support to their employees, give business insight with data analysis, and find ways to become more efficient.

Apprenticeships can be a great way to develop new talent, regardless of age or level. They are also a good way to upskill your existing team. The on-the job training they provide, the culture of learning that is fostered, and the boost in staff morale and retention are all benefits. The apprenticeship levy is one of many funding options. I encourage companies to take advantage of this opportunity to create a skilled and motivated workforce.

Curtis Sharpe, who recently completed the Level 5 Payroll assistant Management Apprenticeship and received the CIPP, was awarded the ‘Best work-based project 2024’ at the ceremony. The 39-year old is eager to share his experiences and encourage other professionals to follow in his footsteps.

“I chose to do a payroll apprentice because I liked the flexibility of studying modules while working, and the one-onone tutoring. This allowed me to learn on the go. It was also important to have the support of my employer, as it helped me build my technical knowledge and awareness. This allowed me to operate a compliant payroll process.

“The apprenticeship path offered so much more, and it has motivated me continue to progress up the career ladder. I was able to gain access to a network of professionals by becoming a member at CIPP. This allowed me to receive industry updates and information, and also to connect with other students. “I would recommend that anyone considering an apprenticeship speak to their manager about the many benefits of this amazing educational program.”

The CIPP membership is designed to help payroll professionals at every stage of their careers. The CIPP offers a range of membership levels with benefits that are designed to help employees achieve their professional goals. IPP Education is a 100% owned subsidiary of CIPP. It develops, delivers and assesses CIPP approved qualifications and training to industry standards, ensuring compliance.

The CIPP, in collaboration with IPP Education will host a series webinars to share valuable insights on the world of payroll apprentices. For more information please visit: https://www.cipp.org.uk.
