Why Trump and Google are paying employees to quit–and what it means for your business

What surprising thing have President Donald Trump and Google in common? Both companies offered “buyouts’ to existing employees in order to reduce headcount, and align company and agency missions.

Trump’s “Fork” memo gave federal employees the option to resign from January 28 until midnight on February 6, ( and an extension by court order added until February 10), in exchange for receiving a paycheck until September 30 without working. The offer also included benefits that would be added to the paychecks of those who accepted it, even if they changed jobs.

Google offered severance to 25,000 employees in exchange for their voluntary resignation. Google has not released details about these severance package, but they must be generous enough to entice people to accept them.

In most companies, it is standard practice to offer buyouts instead of layoffs. I’ve run voluntary buyouts before. It’s not surprising. Trump and Google both have the same reason.
