CIPD will lead research on responsible AI adoption

While artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool for growth, it is important to understand its impact on the jobs market, skills requirements, and organizational strategy. The CIPD said this as they began working in collaboration with Innovate UK BridgeAI.

The CIPD launched a research programme backed by the government to bridge the gap between AI innovations and responsible implementation. It stated that efforts to boost AI usage will be undermined if people and organisational factors were not understood properly.

The CIPD and Innovate UK are collaborating on the BridgeAI programme in order to better understand HR, organisational strategy, and human resource development practices that are crucial for successful AI implementation. The research will be used to develop frameworks that promote ethical and responsible AI use, as well as employers’ understanding of their organisational and skills development needs.

Peter Cheese, CEO of the CIPD said that AI is accelerating quickly and will have an impact on jobs, careers, and workplaces. We must all ensure that AI is used ethically and responsibly, while understanding its many benefits.

As with all new technologies, AI adoption and development within organizations are not always in sync. HR can play an important role in determining how AI will work with people, and how this will shape jobs for the future. This is not just good for businesses but also for people.

Our work on the BridgeAI program will help us better understand how organisations learn about and adopt AI, as well as the skills and frameworks that are needed by our entire workforce.

BridgeAI’s goal is to empower businesses to harness AI responsibly, bridge the AI divide, and shape a sustainable future in the UK for both developers and business. The CIPD is involved because it recognizes that the HR profession plays a crucial role in understanding AI and encouraging its appropriate use at work. It also recognises how AI can impact tasks, roles and performance.

BridgeAI’s involvement by the HR body will be divided into three workstreams. The first one is a research project, which was conducted in partnership with the Institute for the Future of Work. The project is designed to help build a better understanding of AI adoption processes, the ways in which AI can be used or might be used by organizations, and their impact on workers.

Interviews, employee surveys and workshop sessions will be conducted by HR leaders in organisations that are already using AI or who are considering it. This information is crucial for gaining insights on the technology’s impact.

Anna Thomas, co-founder of IFOW and founding co-director, stated: “This project is an action-research that we are conducting with the CIPD to address a critical need within the AI adoption landscape. Understanding the human impact of AI and the dynamics within an organisation is crucial for innovation.

Through our work, we’ll be gathering valuable insights from HR leaders as well as employees to help us shape practical frameworks that encourage ethical AI adoption. This partnership’s research represents a significant step towards putting AI principles into practice. It will help bridge the gap between AI potential and its effective, human-centred and responsible deployment in the workplace.

The CIPD will use the insights gained from the project to create practical tools and guidance to help HR leaders adopt AI in their organisation. It will also inform its profession map, which outlines the knowledge and behaviors that HR professionals require.

The CIPD and other BridgeAI partners will continue to work together to improve the framework for ethical AI adoption. They will also extend the AI skill framework in order to better inform the skills needed.

Sara El-Hanfy is the head of AI at Innovate UK. She said, “BridgeAI joins forces with CIPD in order to champion responsible AI adoption in the workplace.” This partnership is designed to provide businesses with ethical AI frameworks, and help their employees unlock the full potential of AI.
